In Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston uses heavily symbolic language to highlight the imbalance of power that exists between men and women. In doing this, she reminds the reader of the similarities between Janie’s story and the historic plight of the African American people, as well as their suppression by whites and the inequality and injustice that followed them well into the 20^th century.
